The Barley Mow

The Barley Mow is a part thatched two-storey inn probably built originally as a drover's cottage around the 16th century.

It is in a beautiful country setting surrounded by fields.

About the pub

The lovely atmospheric main bar has a low beamed ceiling, panelled walls and a delightful inglenook fireplace with bread oven housing a warm winter log fire.

The other bar has recently been extended to include a new fireplace with wood burning stove, the work sympathetically carried out with genuine old beams, bricks and flagstones and now blending perfectly with the older part of the building. At the back is a secluded terrace and large beer garden with children's' play area and boule pitch.

Time at the Bar

Weekday opening times are from 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. till 11 p.m. Families are welcome. Telephone: (01202) 882140.

This remote and beautifully situated inn is best reached from the Holt turning off the Ferndown by-pass then left at the Broomhill crossroads.

The inn has its own large car park plus an overspill when busy, also a small lay-by at the front.

The Walk

Approx. distance of walk: 3.5 miles. OS Map 195 SU 032/023. This very enjoyable country walk, ideal for families and which includes a nature trail, follows a series of field paths, a woodland path, bridleway tracks and peaceful country lanes.

From the inn turn right across the Green where you will find a gap in the hedge signposted, Lonnen Road. Cross the ditch climbing the stile into the field and walk straight across to the stile and plank bridge in the hedge opposite. Maintain your direction across to another stile, go over onto the bridleway and turn left. The bridleway route is behind the barn but often blocked so continue ahead towards the farm buildings turning right at the large painted footpath sign. Pass through the farmyard to re-join the bridleway and walk up to the road.

Go straight across, through the gate opposite and follow the track, over the river and through the gate into the field. Keep straight ahead through the gate opposite walking beside the hedge and ditch and up to the stile. Cross the track and head up the field to the stile and continue ahead close to the fence on the left. Upon reaching the stile cross into the adjoining field and bear left following the wire fence downhill and over another stile. At the bottom cross the stile and plank bridge then bear right, past the recently constructed ponds making for the crossing point in the hedge. Go over the bridge into the field, turning left and make for the stile then turn immediately right, over the concrete bridge and bear right up across the field to the gate, go out into the lane and turn right.

Keeping to the right-hand side, walk along the lane for a short distance turning left into Sheepcroft Lane. Go to the end of this gravel road then using the stile or gate enter the field on the left. Keep straight on to a similar gate and stile making for the stile ahead. Maintain direction over a series of stiles leading to a wood. Follow this very attractive path up to the lane and turn left.

Carefully walk up the hill, turning right into God's Blessing Lane so named, it is said, because Cromwell's men, who were billeted near by, were blessed before the siege of Corfe Castle. Walk along the verge, past the entrance to Stewarts Nursery and look for the signed path on the left. Keep to the nature trail which passes a series of interesting fact boards then fork right across the wooden bridge. The path winds its way round a hedge and fenced field, home to many wild orchids, before turning into a field. Keep straight ahead walking almost to the far hedge then turn right through the gateway, (waymarked) up the field and upon reaching the pair of stiles cross into the adjoining field. Walk to the gate opposite, go out into the lane and turn left back to the pub.
