27 September 2007 - BLANDFORD TO HOST WORLD SHOVE HA’PENNY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007

This year’s World Shove Ha’penny Championships will take place at the Bryanston Club in Blandford Forum on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October.

Sponsored by Hall & Woodhouse and Buckfield Group, the Championships include competitions for men, ladies and pairs – competing for prize money in excess of £2000.

Shove Ha’penny is one of the UK’s oldest sports, dating back to the 15th Century. The game is played on a smooth board made of wood or stone, with parallel lines or grooves running horizontally. Players place five coins (Ha’pennies) at the end of the board, and then strike the coin with the heel of their hand so that it lies between the lines engraved on the board (beds). To win, players must place a coin in each bed three times.

Rick Payne, Hall & Woodhouse Brands Marketing Manager, comments: “Shove Ha’penny is a traditional Dorset pub game, and so we’re delighted to be able to host this year’s World Championships here in Blandford. Although I can highly recommend that spectators enjoy a pint of one of our Badger ales whilst watching the Championships, it’s only fair that I remind them that placing your glass or spilling beer on the Shove Ha’penny board is a major faux pas!”

The closing date for entries is Thursday 4th October 2007. For further information, contact Nigel Jones at The Railway Hotel on 01258 456374 or railwayblandford@btopenworld.com.
