About the ale

River Cottage StingerAs part of our Seasonal Cask Ale programme, Summer 2007 sees the long awaited return of Stinger on Draught. The 'tongue tingling' ale will be available from May and offers a refreshing beer to quench Summer thirsts.

River Cottage and Hall & Woodhouse have been working together to brew a new organic handcrafted ale, which uses organic nettles hand-picked at River Cottage HQ, in Dorset. The result is River Cottage Stinger - a wonderful tongue tingling ale.

Hall & Woodhouse Head Brewer, Tim Morris, who helped to brew the recipe for the ale said: "Stinger is made from fresh organic Dorset nettles from the River Cottage estate added to the copper. It has a grassy herbal aroma with subtle gooseberry and lemon citrus notes that build up towards the end of the glass. It is finished with a slightly spicy after taste that lingers beautifully."

Nettles were once a standard tonic beer for spring and summer use in England, being regarded as a remedy for gout and rheumatic pains, as well as an refreshing drink in its own right.

Hugh Fearnley - Whittingstall

Hugh Fearnley – WhittingstallHugh Fearnley - Whittingstall from River Cottage says, "Working with the Badger team to create a new organic beer? A tough job, but someone had to do it ...!" Hugh Fearnley - Whittingstall goes on to say, "I'm delighted with the results. I think we have produced a delicious and refreshing beer with true West Country character and real depth. Stinger is slightly spicy with a light bitterness and a subtle tingle that comes from the nettles. Equally good with summer barbecues and winter roasts - or while sitting on a hay bale watching the sun go down..."

"Of course it's also great to have another opportunity to support Rural Revival who will be getting a share of the proceeds from every sale of Stinger. Rural Revival are doing some excellent work supporting rural community projects all around Britain."

Availability: Stinger is available in 500 ml bottles and can be bought from www.badgerdirect.com or our Brewery shop.
