About the ale

A refreshing Premium ale with a light fruity flavour

The light, refreshing character of our award-winning golden ale is distinguished by its subtle elderflower aroma, reminiscent of a summer's evening. Champion is particularly rewarding when served chilled.

What People Say...

On The BBC Food and Drink Show, the discerning palates of Jilly Gouldon and Oz Clarke put beers and lagers under the microscope and chose Badger Ales's Golden Champion Ale as an ale to recommend for summer drinking.

"Divine" summed up their thoughts and this effervescent Jilly went on to praise the flowery taste of this true champion ale commenting on "..all those lovely floral scents." "It's like sitting by an open window and in streams the garden.." She naturally noticed the presence of elderflower which is important to the flowery taste, and finished by prasising the "glorious...lilting honey quality. It is divine, I'm going to be drinking lots of this.

Two in a Row From Tesco

Tesco, the biggest retailer of beer in the UK, organises an annual Summer and Autumn beer challenge to all UK breweries. Blind tasted by a panel of industry peers, the winners are judged according to appearance, aroma, taste and flavours, aftertaste and overall appeal.

Tesco Award 1998

With around 100 entries from 70 brewers entering the competition, even getting into the 16 finalists is no mean feat. Badger Golden Champion Ale was however awarded the outright winner of the 1998 Tesco Spring and Summer Challenge. The challenge was judged by an eminent panel of members of the British Guild of Beer Writers including top writers, Michael Jackson, Roger Protz, Barrie Pepper and Andrew Jefford and key Tesco personnel.

Michael Jackson, one of the judges had this to comment on this fine ale :

"Even a single sip set me thinking of fresh, sunny spring days and a glass of beer with lunch in the garden."

With Golden Champion Ale under their belt, the Badger Ales also made it to the final for the 1999 summer challenge with a lager. This time, the Badger Ales was pipped into second place after a recount due to the two beers being judged joint first. Click here to buy this beer...

Following its success in the Tesco Beer Challenge, Golden Champion Ale has also gone on to win the Beers and Ciders category of the 2002 Quality Food and Drink Awards.

Here the judges were looking for excellence in taste, presentation, aroma and value for money. Golden Champion Ale was complimented on its "clean delicate, crisp depth of flavour appealing to both lager and ale drinkers at a good price".

Availability: Available nationally from most supermarkets and a growing number of off licences and independent retailers Golden Champion Ale (5%ABV) is available in 500ml bottles for pure indulgence.
